Job Description Job Description Position Purpose: The Substation 1st Class Lineman is a highly skilled position responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical substation equipment and systems. This role requires extensive knowledge of high-voltage systems, strict adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work independently or lead crews on complex substation projects. The Substation 1st Class Lineman ensures all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities: Install, maintain, test, and repair substation equipment including breakers, transformers, switches, bus structures, relays, and control panels Perform energized and de-energized work in accordance with safety regulations and approved procedures Read, interpret, and work from electrical prints, one-line diagrams, schematics, and specifications Perform grounding, rigging, and equipment setting using cranes and other heavy equipment Conduct inspections, troubleshooting, and testing of substation components to ensure system reliability Ensure compliance with OSHA, NESC, company safety rules, and job-site safety requirements Lead, mentor, and train apprentices and lower-classification linemen as assigned Coordinate work activities with supervisors, engineers, and other craft personnel Complete required documentation including job reports, switching orders, and safety paperwork Respond to emergency outages and perform restoration work as required Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in safe working condition Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle and feel; and reach with hands and arms. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions and around high-voltage electrical equipment. May require overtime, weekends, and travel depending on project demands as well as storm work. Must comply with all safety policies and use required protective equipment. Competencies: Self-Motivated Team-Oriented Customer Oriented Must be able to follow Company safety rules and all other Company policies. Required Qualifications: Minimum 4 or more years of recent field experience Valid Class A Commercial Driver License and Acceptable driving record Ability to operate equipment Able to read and communicate effectively in English Able to travel long distances at short notice, when required Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required Able to lift more than 50 lbs. Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE Willing to work overtime when requested Willingness to glove/work live high voltage distribution power lines Experience with utility-scale transmission or distribution projects. Minimum of 4 years of experience in substation construction and maintenance (preferred) Thorough knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems and substation operations Strong understanding of electrical safety practices, grounding, and lockout/tagout procedures Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions Special Position Requirements: This is a safety sensitive position, and all applicable policies including drug testing and background checks will apply.
