Job Description:

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, radiography (ARRT) (R) AND possess Advanced ARRT certification in computed tomography (CT). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). English Language Proficiency: Be proficient in written and spoken English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must meet the grade requirements for GS-09 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography). EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in Federal Service, directly related to the position being filled, that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to, apply knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations; apply knowledge of and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; interpret examination requests accurately; understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; use methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of interest to the physician; gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; apply knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; applying knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and apply knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Candidates must also demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*): 1.* Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
2. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
3.* Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
6. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G25, Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) Qualification Standard. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs), light carrying (under 15 lbs), straight pulling (up to 1 hour), pulling hand over hand (up to 1 hour), pushing (up to 1 hour), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (up to 8 hours), standing (up to 2 hours), kneeling (up to 1 hour), repeated bending (up to 4 hours), ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable to 13" to 16" Jaeger 1to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shade of colors, hearing (aid permitted).
