- Students will work an average of 10 hours per week.
- Each week, there will be a mandatory group video session
(approx. 90 minutes) each Friday.
- Navigator shifts will only be held Wednesday through Friday.
Shift details will be discussed at time of orientation. in
partnership with the Mary S. Peake Fellowship, is energized to
offer Summer internships for standout Juniors, Seniors, and
Graduate students to serve as Community Navigators, helping small
businesses in our area improve their online presence. supporting
community businesses. Students across all degree programs are
invited to apply for this experience. Selected students will work
closely with professionals at the Peake Fellowship as well as FSU
faculty to1. Perform desktop research and analysis on FSU-relevant
businesses2. Work directly with FSU community businesses to help
them reduce their cybersecurity risk and increase their access to
business growth opportunities.In the process, students will earn
micro-credentials in cybersecurity and data privacy best practices
for small businesses based on the National Institute of Standards
and Technology (NIST). No prior IT or cybersecurity experience is
needed. This nationally recognized NIST capability set will be
useful for any career path.Description of Work
Continued::BackgroundInsufficient cybersecurity is a threat to
businesses and organizations of all sizesincluding Fayetteville
State University. Knowledge about cybersecurity is now considered a
valuable asset in almost every industry and profession. However,
small and Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs), in particular,
often lack the resources to identify and reduce cybersecurity risks
that could bankrupt a business. For this reason, FSU is offering
paid work experience to eligible students during which they will
receive skills training in online research, coordinating business
meetings, and providing consulting services to businesses to reduce
the risks of cybersecurity exposure.Community Navigators will:
Learn about cybersecurity and data privacy Conduct research on
organizations that could support the needs of Fayetteville-area
small businesses Research businesses for multiple collaborative
projects Build descriptive pages for assigned organizations in a
Wikipedia-like system Work directly with community businesses under
the close direction and guidance of Peake Fellowship professionals
and FSU faculty and staff to Identify opportunities for
cyber-secure growth Coach business owners and leaders on best
practices for optimizing online presence and cybersecurity
Collaborate with fellow Community NavigatorsSkills and interests of
top-flight Community Navigators include: Commitment to continuously
learn from people and new experiences Proven ability to communicate
effectively, collaborate on a team, make an impact, and be
accountable Online research skills and attention to detail
Passionate motivation to help local businesses grow, create jobs,
and strengthen each community they serve
- Most students will also receive academic credits in an
internship course.About the Mary S. Peake FellowshipNamed after
pioneering community leader and educator , the Peake Fellowship is
a national Applied Learning & Teaching organization missioned to
help recent college graduates, returning veterans, and military
spouses develop next-generation leadership skills as they coach
small & local businesses to succeed in a Networked AI (artificial
intelligence) & Big Data-driven world. Across the country, small &
local businesses regularly lose out to Networked AI & Big
Data-powered global competitors who offer buyers more for less. To
address this challenge, innovators from industry, the arts, public
service, and education launched the Peake Fellowship for next-gen
leaders helping local businesses grow.Minimum Education and
Experience Requirements::To be considered for the Community
Navigator role, students must be rising seniors or rising juniors
in good standing with the university in any degree program (select
MBA students will also be eligible to apply).Additional
requirements: Receive a nomination from a member of FSUs faculty.
Available to work the entire period of your internship from a
location of your choosing. Able to join each video conference and
participate on camera for the duration of your internship. Any
group video conferences (e.g., seminars, role plays, etc) will be
scheduled for Fridays with the exception of Fridays that coincide
with FSU employee holidays. Dedicate all predefined work/internship
hours to Community Navigator work only.Community Navigators are not
permitted to do school work, additional jobs, or other unrelated
activities during internship working hours.Knowledge skills and
abilities:: Demonstrate a commitment to the community and giving
back Have sufficient background and maturity to learn from this
experience Be well organized, take direction well, and be a
self-starter willing to seek assignments and guidance Seek
continuous learning and improvement through feedback and other

Be proficient or have a strong working knowledge navigating Google
Workspace, internet browsers, keyboarding skills, etc.Preferred
