Overview A Wastewater Operator is responsible for operating,
monitoring, and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities to
ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to protect
public health and the environment. This role involves mechanical,
chemical, and biological processes to treat and discharge or reuse
wastewater safely. Key Responsibilities Operate and monitor
wastewater treatment plant equipment and processes, including
pumps, motors, aerators, filters, and chemical feed systems.
Collect and analyze samples of wastewater and sludge to monitor
treatment efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards.
Adjust treatment processes based on test results and operational
data to maintain optimal performance. Inspect and maintain
equipment, perform basic repairs, and report malfunctions or needed
maintenance. Record operational data, including flow rates,
chemical usage, and meter readings, in daily logs or digital
systems. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local
environmental regulations and safety standards (e.g., EPA, OSHA).
Respond to alarms or emergencies, troubleshoot system issues, and
take corrective actions. Maintain plant cleanliness and safety,
including chemical storage areas and mechanical rooms. Assist with
preventative maintenance programs and improvement projects.
Collaborate with other operators, engineers, and supervisors to
ensure efficient plant operations. Qualifications Education: High
school diploma or GED required; associate degree in environmental
science, water/wastewater technology, or related field preferred.
Experience: Prior experience in wastewater or water treatment
preferred; entry-level positions may provide on-the-job training.
Licensing: State wastewater operator certification Skills &
Abilities: Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and
equipment. Ability to read meters, gauges, and flow charts. Strong
mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. Understanding of
safety and environmental compliance requirements. Basic computer
literacy for data entry and SCADA systems. Physical ability to lift
50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or adverse
weather conditions. Work Environment Work is performed in both
indoor and outdoor settings, sometimes in noisy, wet, or odor-prone
conditions. Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duty
may be required to maintain continuous operations. Must adhere to
strict safety procedures and wear protective gear when handling
chemicals or operating machinery
